General Interest

CHARITY
Founded the charity Project Joy in 2012, which feeds children in need in Duluth. In 2020, his brother Daniel rode his longboard 2,500 miles down the Mississippi river trail, from Minnesota to the Gulf of Mexico, as a fundraiser for the charity.

OLYMPIC FUNDING
Was featured in a December 2009 episode of “Bank of Hollywood” on the E! television network, where celebrity judges award their own money to the participants seeking it. Plys asked for $6,500 to cover his parents’ trip to watch him compete at the Vancouver 2010 Olympic Winter Games, and he won the funding. One judge, singer Melody Thornton of the Pussycat Dolls, asked him on a date while another said Plys should consider a modelling career. (cnn.com, 17 Feb 2010)

FALSE ALARM
At the 2021 World Championship in Calgary, Plys tested positive for Covid-19 going into the playoff rounds. The championship was delayed before the result was deemed a false positive, but the US team lost their next game and were eliminated. “Tough break. Facing that kind of adversity moving forward into something like the Olympics, I think, could be a really beneficial thing for us.” (Athlete, 7 Jan 2022)

PROFESSIONAL
Only curler to be sponsored by Red Bull. Appeared in ESPN’s annual “Body Issue” in 2010.

POST-CAREER PLANS
“I’m pretty simple. Have a converted van for Alyssa and the dogs that I can travel in, and just live a very simple life.” (Athlete, 6 Jan 2022)
