OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
France is the home of Pierre de Coubertin, founder of the modern Olympic Games. Its NOC has competed at every edition of the Olympic Games and Olympic Winter Games.
France has won 124 medals (36 gold) at the Olympic Winter Games. Its greatest success has come in Alpine skiing, in which it has won 48 medals (15 gold). In biathlon it has won 25 medals (nine gold), including six at Vancouver 2010, the most by any nation.
Alpine skier Jean-Claude Killy won all three available gold medals at Grenoble 1968 and later became a member of the International Olympic Committee. Biathlete Martin Fourcade is France's most decorated winter athlete, with seven medals, and his five golds are more than any other French Olympian. Biathlete Marie Dorin-Habert leads the women with four medals (one gold).
With notable success in cycling and fencing, France has won 883 Olympic medals (263 gold). Roger Ducret and Philippe Cattiau, both fencers, have the most medals among Frenchmen, with eight (both with three gold, four silver, one bronze).
