OLYMPIC GAMES HISTORY
Australia, whose National Olympic Committee was formed and recognised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) in 1895, has competed at every Olympic Games. In 1908 and 1912 it competed as Australasia in a combined team with New Zealand.
Australia has also competed at the Olympic Winter Games, first in 1936 and continuously since 1952 and has won 15 medals (five gold). Five Australians have won two Olympic medals: Dale Begg-Smith, Alisa Camplin, Lydia Lassila (all freestyle skiing), Torah Bright (snowboarding), and Steven Bradbury (short track speed skating). Those five also won each of Australia's five gold medals.
Australia won its first Winter Olympic medal at the Lillehammer 1994 Olympic Winter Games, a bronze in men's short track speed skating relay. Steven Bradbury, a member of that bronze-winning relay team, became the first Australian (and southern hemisphere athlete) to win gold at Salt Lake City 2002. Trailing the pack in the 1000m final, all four skaters in front of Bradbury crashed around the final corner, allowing the Australian to glide through to gold.
Its best Olympic Winter Games have come in 2010, 2014, and 2018, with three medals, while they won two gold in 2002 and 2010. Their best winter sports have been freestyle skiing, with eight medals including three gold, and snowboarding, with four medals and one gold.
Australia has been successful in many sports, but particularly so in swimming and athletics. The nation has won 510 Olympic medals (167 gold). Swimmers Ian Thorpe and Emma McKeon are the only Australians to have won five gold medals. McKeon leads Australia's Olympic medal list with 11, highlighted by her performance at Tokyo 2020, where she won seven medals. She is followed on that list by Thorpe and another swimmer, Leisel Jones, with nine each, followed by three female swimmers with eight Olympic medals: Dawn Fraser, Petria Thomas, and Susie O'Neill.
The NOC's most successful competitor in athletics is Shirley Strickland, who won a total of seven medals (three gold, one silver, three bronze) in sprint events and hurdles between 1948 and 1956.
