He took up wheelchair tennis two months after his motorcycle accident in November 2015. (sbs.com.au, 17 Jan 2021)
:
He played able-bodied tennis until age 13, when he gave it up for Australian rules football. After his accident he was visited in hospital by a Tennis Australia wheelchair coach, who persuaded him to try wheelchair tennis. "I was at the Royal Talbot, the rehabilitation centre in Melbourne, and I saw on my timetable wheelchair tennis - I didn't even know the sport existed. I picked up the racket and played like it was yesterday." Through those early sessions he was able to meet Greg Crump, then head coach of Tennis Australia, who identified his talent for the sport. "Out of a huge negative in my life, wheelchair tennis has been a huge positive. I'm looking forward to seeing how far I can take it." (geelongadvertiser.com.au, 03 Feb 2017)

Impairment Details
In November 2015 he hit a brick wall while riding his motorcycle when returning from a friend's house. The collision left him with a broken back in four places, spinal cord damage at the T12 vertebra, a broken shoulder blade and four broken ribs, one which was removed during surgery. The injuries meant he was unable to walk. He was put into a medically-induced coma for several days, and then spent two weeks in an intensive care unit and two-and-a-half months at Royal Talbot Rehabilitation Centre in Melbourne, VIC, Australia. "The last thing I remember was jumping on a bike at my friend's house, then I was waking up in hospital. It was very hard to adjust to such a change in my life, words can't really describe it, but I always try and make the best out of everything," (geelongadvertiser.com.au, 03 Feb 2017; geelongindy.com.au, 28 Nov 2017; sbs.com.au, 17 Jan 2021)
