General Interest

General
Australia secured their spot at Tokyo 2020 through the 2019 Asia/Oceania Zonal Championships in Pattaya, Thailand. The Australians are four-time medallists at the Paralympic Games, but they are still looking for their first gold.

The Australian team competed at each edition of the Paralympic Games between 1992 and 2012. They lost in the bronze medal match in 1992 and 1996 before securing four consecutive podium finishes between 2000 and 2012. Australia reached the final at both Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004 but lost to Canada and the United States of America, respectively. At the 2008 Games in Beijing, they were defeated by the US team in the semifinals before they managed to overcome Japan in the bronze medal match. The Aussies did beat the US women at London 2012, winning 40-39 in the semifinals, but they then lost 58-44 to Germany in the final. Australia did not compete at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Australia won bronze medals at the world championship in 1994, 1998, and 2002. They also reached the bronze medal match at the next two editions of the tournament but were beaten by Germany in 2006 and by Canada in 2010. The Australian team did not qualify for the quarterfinals at the 2018 World Championship in Hamburg, and finished with a final ranking of ninth.
