General Interest

General
Australia qualified for the 2020 Paralympic Games by winning the 2019 Asia Oceania Championships in Pattaya, Thailand. The Australian team have participated in each edition of the Paralympic Games in which wheelchair basketball has been part of the programme except for 1964 in Tokyo.

At the 2016 Games in Rio, they recorded four wins and one loss in the group stage to advance to the quarterfinals, where they were defeated by eventual bronze medallists Great Britain 74-51. Australia then beat hosts Brazil in a classification play-off match to finish the tournament ranked sixth. The Australians had finished on the podium in four of the previous five editions of the Paralympic Games prior to Rio 2016. They began their impressive run in 1996 with victory over Great Britain in the gold medal match to claim Australia's first Paralympic title. They were unable to repeat this success four years later on home soil in Sydney, where they were eliminated at the quarterfinal stage by the US team. The Australian team won silver medals at Athens 2004 and London 2012 and claimed a second gold medal at the 2008 Games in Beijing, contesting the gold medal match against Canada on all three occasions.

The Australians are two-time gold medallists at the world championships, winning back-to-back titles in 2010 and 2014. At the 2018 edition in Hamburg, they lost to the United States of America in the semifinals before recovering to secure bronze with a 68-57 victory over the Islamic Republic of Iran. Australia also claimed bronze at the 2006 World Championship in Amsterdam.
