He took up wheelchair basketball at age 18 at Adana Marti Engelliler sports club in Turkey. (aa.com.tr, 14 May 2015)
:
He played able-bodied basketball with his school team and was encouraged to take up wheelchair basketball by his physical education teacher Egemen Fidan. "My physical education teacher saw the problem with my ankles and asked if I wanted to play wheelchair basketball with Adana Marti Engelliler sports club, which was led by our school principal. I watched their training, and when I saw that wheelchair basketball players bump into each other and hit each other, I got scared, I ran away and went home. The next time when he called me again, I just went along and sat down in a wheelchair." (aa.com.tr, 14 May 2015)
