He competed in both wheelchair athletics and wheelchair basketball until age 12. He was then involved in wrestling, which he took up during his junior year of high school, before switching back to wheelchair basketball when he attended Edinboro University in Pennsylvania under the guidance of coach Jim Glatch in 2006.
