She began playing wheelchair basketball in 2014. (teamusa.org, 23 Aug 2018)
:
She was originally involved in basketball, tennis and softball before switching to wheelchair basketball. "I pretty much tried everything [growing up], and basketball was always the sport that I came back to. It was my first love and just my favourite thing to do. As soon as I got in a chair, I loved it. I've never looked back. I could keep up with everybody else and I didn't have to push twice as hard as everybody else. I could just play the game and do what I loved to do. It was much easier than playing able-bodied basketball with a prosthetic leg. It gave me opportunities to do things that I never would have had if I hadn't lost my leg." Impairment Details
At age 10 in 2012 she discovered a large lump in her right knee and began experiencing extreme pain. After a visit to hospital she was diagnosed with stage four osteosarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer that led to the amputation of her right leg. She then underwent a rotationplasty surgery where her foot was reattached as her working knee. Within a year of the procedure she was walking on a prosthesis. General
TV APPEARANCE
She appeared on US television show 'The Doctors' because of a unique rotationplasty amputation she had undergone. "I chose a rare form of amputation called a rotationplasty. Essentially, they took out the knee joint and rotated the bottom portion of the leg 180 degrees and reattached it at the thigh. My foot is backward and it functions as my knee."
