General Interest

General
Rwanda are making their second Paralympic Games appearance in Tokyo, having made history as the first African nation to compete in women's sitting volleyball at the Paralympic Games in Rio in 2016.

At the 2016 Games the Rwandans lost all three pool matches in straight sets, beginning with eventual gold medallists the People's Republic of China, then the Islamic Republic of Iran, followed by eventual runners-up the United States of America. They ended their campaign in Rio with another straight sets loss to Canada in the classification playoff for seventh place.

Rwanda made their world championship debut in 2018, where they lost their opening matches to Canada and hosts the Netherlands. They managed to post a group win over Croatia, but it was not enough to make the knockout stages. Their tournament ended with a straight sets classification loss to the Islamic Republic of Iran, followed by a 3-0 win over Finland in the 11th-place playoff.

The Rwandan team qualified for Tokyo courtesy of victory against Egypt in the final at the 2019 African Championships, on home soil in Kigali.
