General Interest

General
Japan qualified automatically for Tokyo as host nation, and are making their third Paralympic Games appearance. They finished last out of eight teams on their debut at the 2008 Games in Beijing, having failed to win a match against group opponents the Netherlands, Slovenia and Ukraine, or against their two classification round opponents Lithuania and Latvia.

The Japanese team improved slightly at the 2012 Games in London. After an opening match loss against the Netherlands they posted their first Paralympic victory against hosts Great Britain, in straight sets, followed by defeat to Ukraine. They lost their first classification match to Slovenia, but secured a second victory against Great Britain in the seventh-place playoff to finish the tournament in second-last place.

Japan have made six world championship appearances, and finished in 10th place at the most recent edition in 2018 in the Netherlands. The 2018 tournament was not easy as they found themselves in the same pool as eventual winners the Russian Federation and runners-up the United States of America, to whom they lost on both occasions in straight sets. But they did post a 3-0 pool win over Hungary, followed by a classification round victory against Finland, before ending their campaign with defeat to the Iranian team in the playoff for ninth place.
