General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China have dominated sitting volleyball at the Paralympic Games since it was introduced in 2004, winning the first three gold medals on offer. They defeated the Netherlands in the 2004 final in Athens, before back-to-back gold medal match victories over the United States of America in 2008 and 2012. However, the US team made it third time lucky at the 2016 Games, defeating the Chinese team 3-0 in the gold medal match in Rio.

The Chinese team have been mildly less dominant at the world championships, claiming silver in 2006 before back-to-back world titles in 2010 and 2014 - on both occasions defeating the US team in the final. Their form dipped at the 2018 edition in the Netherlands, however, where they could only manage a bronze medal. They finished top of their group with wins over Italy, the Islamic Republic of Iran and Slovenia, which was followed by a quarterfinal victory against Canada. But their progress was halted in the semifinals by eventual champions the Russian Federation, leaving the Chinese to beat Italy once again to claim bronze.

At continental level, the Chinese team are back-to-back Asian Games gold medallists, and qualified for Tokyo through their victory at the Asia Oceania championships in 2019.
