She participated in an event in Shanghai, People's Republic of China for children with impairments and, when she watched a sitting volleyball match, she saw the fun the players were having and it gave her hope that she could lead a full life and be self-reliant. She was also 1.68 metres tall at age 14 and played for the school basketball and table tennis teams before her arm was amputated, so Shanghai's sitting volleyball coaches were impressed by her physique and invited her to train with the women's team.
