General Interest

General
Bosnia and Herzegovina arrive in Tokyo as runners-up at both the most recent Paralympic Games and world championship tournaments.

Despite the nation's relatively young existence, Bosnia and Herzegovina have emerged as the second-most successful team in sitting volleyball at the Paralympic Games, with two gold and three silver medals since making their debut at the 2000 Games in Sydney, where they lost the final to the Islamic Republic of Iran. That final in Sydney marked the beginning of a long rivalry with the Iranian team, as the two teams would go on to contest every Paralympic final this century so far. Bosnia and Herzegovina won their first Paralympic gold in 2004, ending the Iranians' run of four straight Paralympic titles, and claimed their second Paralympic title with a 3-1 victory at London 2012. The Iranians claimed victory in straight sets in the final in 2008, and won 3-1 in the final in Rio in 2016.

At the world championships, Bosnia and Herzegovina have also emerged as the second-most successful team behind the Islamic Republic of Iran, with three titles in five appearances since 2002. They defeated Germany in the 2002 final, and made it back-to-back titles in 2006 with victory over the Iranians. However, the Iranian team turned the tables in the final of the 2010 edition with victory in five sets. Four years later, Bosnia and Herzegovina claimed their third world title with a win in the final over Brazil. At the most recent edition in 2018 in the Netherlands, they faced off against their Iranian rivals for the third time in a world championship final, with the Iranians proving too strong with a straight sets victory that saw both teams qualify for Tokyo.

Prior to the Paralympic Games in Tokyo, sitting volleyball remains the only sport in which Bosnia and Herzegovina have won a medal at the Paralympic Games.
