She was contacted by coach Nicole Ban, who had heard she had been a competitive athlete and reached out to ask if she would be interested in playing sitting volleyball. "I wanted to build a new identity as a Para athlete. I had always played a team sport before my accident and it felt like a natural fit to join another team-based sport." Impairment Details
In August 2013 she was riding an inflatable tube being pulled by a boat on Shuswap Lake, BC, Canada, when she was thrown off when the boat turned a corner. She dislocated her left knee, fractured her tibia and severed the popliteal artery behind her knee. The leg was amputated above the knee the following month, and she spent six months in hospital recovering. (paralympic.ca, Sep 2016; theglobeandmail.com, 26 Dec 2014; paralympic.ca, 01 Feb 2020)

General
SECOND CHANCE
She says the postponement of the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo worked in her favour after she underwent surgery on her left leg in February 2020. "It would have been a huge challenge [to recover by the original dates for the Games]. I'm ecstatic the Games are postponed. It doesn't seem like anybody else in my programme is ecstatic, so I try to curb my enthusiasm as much as I can. A year allows me to actually dedicate myself to recovering and then return to sport as opposed to balancing both at the same time within six months." (ckpgtoday.ca, 01 Apr 2020)

FURTHER EDUCATION
After completing a bachelor's degree in biology with a minor in French language and literature at the University of Alberta in Edmonton, AB, Canada in 2008, she also earned a degree in secondary education and teaching from the same university in 2012. She plans to return to the University of Alberta in the northern hemisphere autumn of 2021 to begin her master's degree in education and counselling.
