Germany are making their sixth Paralympic appearance in Tokyo since their debut at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. Prior to that, West Germany won gold at the 1980 Games and silver at the 1976 Games. After reunification, Germany's highest finish at the Games is sixth place, which they achieved on debut in Barcelona. They did not appear at the 2008 or 2012 Games, but returned to the Paralympic stage in Rio in 2016. A single victory in the group stage in Rio against Algeria was enough to qualify for the quarterfinals where they were eliminated 7-6 by the United States of America.

Germany qualified for Tokyo after claiming the silver medal at the 2018 World Championships in Malmo, which was their first ever podium finish at the tournament. After finishing second in their group behind Brazil, to whom they suffered their only group stage defeat, the Germans dispatched the Chinese team in the quarterfinals and Belgium in the semifinals. This setup a final in Malmo against Brazil, who proved too strong once again with an 8-3 victory over the Germans.
