"The moment I hopped on the bike, I knew this was it. I got my hands on the grips and I remember turning the crank over for the first time and just went, 'Oh, how much anger and frustration and aggression am I going to get out on this?' This sport helped fill a void by being part of a cycling community." (latrobevalleyexpress.com.au, 26 Apr 2012; cyclingtips.com, 22 Aug 2018)

Impairment Details
In 1994 he was involved in a car accident that resulted in his right leg being amputated and nerve damage to his left leg. (cyclingtips.com, 22 Aug 2018)

General
INSPIRED BY A SAMURAI
He names a book by Miyamoto Musashi, a 16th century Japanese swordsman, as an inspiration for him to overcome his injuries. "A long time ago I was a little lost in life and read a little book ['The Book of Five Rings'] by a guy by the name of Miyamoto Musashi. It certainly helped shape my philosophies in life. I read it probably about five years after I had a pretty bad car accident where I lost my leg and almost my life. I was in the wilderness, and that book gave me some inspiration to move out of it. I even got a tattoo of what he called the five elements of being. I needed myself to be brought back into being, and the tattoo reminds me of who I am now." (adelaidenow.com.au, 16 Sep 2016)

AUTHOR
In 2007 he released the book 'Travelling Hopefully', which is about his life following his accident. (stuarttripp.wordpress.com, 12 Apr 2012; paralympic.org.au, 28 Oct 2011)

FURTHER EDUCATION
As well as being a qualified plumber, from 1998 to 2000 he studied a bachelor's degree in adult learning and development at Monash University in Melbourne, VIC, Australia. "[Studying at Monash] gave me an opportunity at that very point in my life where I needed to start a very cathartic healing process." (paralympic.org.au, 01 Sep 2016; teammonash.blogspot.com, 16 Sep 2016; LinkedIn profile, 01 Sep 2016)
