He had a good relationship with bike manufacturer Trek, who provided him with a handcycle after his accident. He decided to pursue the sport after watching the 2012 Paralympic Games in London. "It's the one thing that I can do where I can go out and ride and do things with my other friends that are riding on normal bikes. I had it [handcycle] probably within six months [of the accident]. I was pretty surprised how hard the work was. Seeing London was an eye-opening sort of thing. And when Rio came around, I was well and truly competitive. It is really hard to get into the Australian Paralympic team, I was next in line to make the team for Rio but just missed out." Impairment Details
In 2011 a crash while mountain biking caused damage to his spinal cord that resulted in paraplegia. "When I was first hurt, it was all a bit of a blur for a day or two. It's crazy, as it isn't just that you can't walk any more. There are massive changes to your body. It's incredibly complex and you just don't know or understand until someone explains it to you or you have to live through it. Life as it was, was certainly no longer."
