He first practised athletics at age five at a Little Athletics club in Canberra, ACT, Australia. At school he competed against able-bodied students. As a child he wanted to compete in athletics like his older brothers. He eventually did and performed well, but he was unable to reach the level he had hoped to. His parents became aware of Para athletics in 2004 when they saw a group of Para athletes at state school championships.
