General Interest
Singapore made its debut Paralympic appearance at the 1988 Games in Seoul, but the NPC had to wait until Beijing 2008 to win a medal for the first time through swimmer Pin Xiu Yip.
Yip is Singapore's most successful athlete at the Paralympic Games. She won the NPC's first gold medal as a 16-year-old in 2008, claiming the title in the women's S3 50m backstroke. She also secured a silver medal in Beijing, finishing runner-up in the S3 50m freestyle. After two fourth-place finishes at London 2012, Yip returned to the top of the podium at the 2016 Games in Rio, winning gold in the S2 100m and 50m backstroke events. She is the only Singaporean athlete to have claimed a Paralympic title.
Dressage rider Laurentia Tan has also secured a number of medals for the NPC, winning three bronze medals and one silver medal across the 2008 and 2012 Games. She was unable to add to her medal haul at Rio 2016, finishing sixth and fifth in the grade 1a individual freestyle and championship test events, respectively.
Singapore's only other Paralympic medallist is Theresa Goh, who won bronze in the women's SB4 100m breaststroke at the 2016 Games in Rio. Goh also shares the Paralympic appearance record for Singaporean competitors with sailor Jovin Tan. Both athletes have competed at the Games on four occasions.
