General Interest
The International Paralympic Committee named six athletes to represent the Refugee Paralympic Team at the 2020 Paralympic Games in Tokyo. The athletes, one woman and five men, will compete in athletics, swimming, canoe and taekwondo.
Two members of the team, Shahrad Nasajpour and Ibrahim Al Hussein, competed at the 2016 Paralympic Games as Independent Paralympic Athletes. Athletics competitor Nasajpour finished 11th in the F37 discus throw in Rio, while swimmer Al Hussein ranked 18th in the S9 50m freestyle and 21st in the S9 100m freestyle events.
For Tokyo, athletics competitor Alia Issa became the first female to be named part of a refugee team at the Paralympic Games. The team is completed by taekwondoka Parfait Hakizimana, canoeist Anas Al Khalifa and swimmer Abbas Karimi.
