Portugal made its Paralympic debut in 1972 in Heidelberg and, following an eight-year absence covering the 1976 and 1980 Games, they have sent a delegation of athletes to every edition since 1984.
Paulo de Almeida Coelho is among Portugal's most successful athletes at the Paralympic Games, winning seven medals [four gold, two silver, one bronze] on the athletics track in a Paralympic career that spanned four Games between 1992 and 2004. He claimed gold over 1500m at Barcelona 1992, Atlanta 1996, and Sydney 2000 in three different classifications, and added a further gold in the T10 5000m in 1996.
Aside from athletics, Portugal's most reliable source of medals has come from boccia, and no other NPC has finished on the podium more times in the sport than Portugal. Portugal's most recent gold medallist in any sport at the Paralympic Games is boccia player Joao Paulo Fernandes, who claimed the BC1 individual title in Beijing in 2008. He also won gold in the individual and team events at the Athens 2004 Games. Another notable Portuguese boccia player is Antonio Marques, who secured team titles in 1988 and 2004 as well as multiple minor medals. Marques also has a bronze medal in the athletics C1 precision throw from the 1988 Games in Seoul.
