Poland - Profile
General Interest
Poland has seen much of its success in the pool, with swimmers among its top medal-winning athletes. Arkadiusz Pawlowski is Poland's most notable swimmer, winning at least one medal at each of his six Paralympic appearances between 1980 and 2000. A versatile swimmer who claimed medals in all strokes over distances between 25m and 200m, Pawlowski's most prolific Games came in 1984 when he won five gold medals.
Athletics has also proved a consistent source of medals for the NPC. Jerzy Dabrowski won gold medals in athletics throwing events at four separate Paralympic Games during the 1980s and 1990s. Dabrowski's first Paralympic gold came in 1980 in Arnhem, where he took the javelin E class title. He followed that success with gold medals in the discus and shot put at the next three editions of the Games. In addition to further minor medals in throwing events, he also secured bronze in the men's long jump E competition in 1980 and was part of the Polish sitting volleyball team that claimed bronze in 1988.
Table tennis player Natalia Partyka has been leading the charge for Poland at recent Games. After failing to reach the podium in her first Paralympic appearance in Sydney in 2000, she won gold in the women's class 10 singles event at the following four Games between 2004 and 2016. She also won minor medals in the class 6-10 team event at Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012, before finally adding gold in that event to her resume at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro.
