Peru - Profile
General Interest
Peru sent its first delegations of athletes to the Paralympic Games in 1972 and 1976. It was then absent from the Games for two decades, but has been represented at every Games since Atlanta 1996. Its most successful sport at the Paralympic Games is swimming, although it has also claimed medals in athletics and table tennis.
Swimmer Jimmy Eulert is Peru's most successful Paralympian, winning five medals, including consecutive golds in the men's S3 50m freestyle in 1996 and 2000. He also claimed a silver in 2000 and two bronze medals in 2004.
Peru's first gold medal at the Paralympic Games was won by table tennis player Teresa Chiappo, who was victorious in the women's class D singles event in Toronto in 1976. At the same Games, Chiappo also made the podium in athletics, claiming bronze in the women's D javelin.
