General Interest

Kazakhstan won its first Paralympic medals at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, one gold and one silver, breaking the National Paralympic Committee's podium drought in its sixth participation.

The gold came thanks to the effort of swimmer Zulfiya Gabidullina who at 50 years of age won the women's S3 100m freestyle event in her second Games. At the same Games in Brazil, she also finished fourth in the S4 50m freestyle which is one of only three fourth-place finishes achieved by a Kazakhstani Paralympian.

The silver medal was earned by another 50-year-old, Raushan Koishibayeva, in the women's 67kg powerlifting event. Unlike Gabidullina, Koishibayeva won her medal on Paralympic debut.

Before 2016, Yuriy Kvitkov had come closest to claiming a medal for the NPC, with his fourth-place finish in the P13 pentathlon at the Athens 2004 Games.

Swimmer Anuar Akhmetov is the other athlete to represent Kazakhstan to have finished fourth, he did so in 2016 in the SB12 100m breaststroke.
