General Interest
Jamaica made its Paralympic debut at the 1968 Games in Tel Aviv, winning gold medals in athletics throwing events as well as swimming. An athlete listed only as Meikle in historical results claimed victory in the women's 50m breaststroke class 4 event, and also won silver in the 50m freestyle class 4 to become the NPC's first multi-medallist.
Leone Williams is among Jamaica's most successful Paralympians, with three gold medals in discus and shot put [1972, 1980] included in her total of six. She also won a medal in swimming in 1972, grabbing silver in the 100m backstroke event in class 6. Nella McPherson won seven medals in swimming and athletics [two gold, three silver, two bronze] at the Games in 1972 and 1980, which is more than any other Jamaican competitor at the Paralympic Games.
Jamaican athletes have found medals harder to come by since 1992, with Alphanso Cunningham claiming the NPC's most two most recent gold medals in the men's F53 discus at Athens 2004 and in the men's F52/53 javelin at London 2012. Jamaica did not win a medal of any type at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.
