General Interest

Iraq made its Paralympic debut at the 1992 Games in Barcelona. The NPC had to wait until the 2004 Games in Athens for its first gold medal, where Faris Abed claimed victory in the men's +100kg powerlifting competition. It was another 12 years before they secured their second, with javelin thrower Kovan Abdulraheem winning the F41 title at Rio 2016, but their third came only a few days later as Garrah Tnaiash came out on top in the men's F40 shot put.

There were also silver medals in athletics, powerlifting, and wheelchair fencing for Iraqi athletes at the 2016 Games, with javelin thrower Wildan Nukhailawi and powerlifter Rasool Mohsin securing the second Paralympic podiums of their careers to become Iraq's first multi-medallists at the Games. Mohsin also won a silver medal at the 2008 Games in Beijing, while Nukhailawi finished with bronze at London 2012.
