General Interest
India won multiple gold medals at a single edition of the Paralympic Games for the first time in Rio de Janeiro in 2016, and at the same time doubled the NPC's all-time tally of Paralympic titles.
Devendra Jhajharia was one of the gold medallists in Brazil, claiming his second javelin title at the Paralympic Games to become the first athlete to win two gold medals for India. His gold in Rio de Janeiro came in the T46 category, while he won his first in the T44/46 class 12 years earlier at Athens 2004. Mariyappan Thangavelu secured India's other gold medal at the 2016 Games, claiming victory in the T42 high jump. Also at Rio 2016, Deepa Malik became the first female athlete representing India to finish on the podium by winning silver in the F53 shot put.
Other notable Indian athletes at the Paralympic Games include Petkar, who won the men's 50m freestyle 3 swimming in 1972, and Joginder Singh Bedi who claimed three medals [one silver, two bronze] in athletics at the 1984 Games.
