General Interest

Iceland's best results at the Paralympic Games have come in the pool, with all the NPC's gold medals bar one coming in swimming events. Iceland won its first gold medal at the 1980 Games, and its most recent came at London 2012.

Iceland's most successful Paralympian is swimmer Kristin Hakonardottir, who won her six gold medals between 1996 and 2004. Her record includes three consecutive titles in the women's S7 100m backstroke. Olafur Eiriksson also put in some memorable performances in the pool in the 1990s, claiming consecutive S9 100m butterfly golds in 1992 and 1996 as well as the S9 400m freestyle title at Barcelona 1992.

The only Icelandic athlete to win gold in a sport other than swimming is Haukur Gunnarsson, who claimed victory in the men's C7 100m [athletics] at the 1988 Games in Seoul.
