General Interest

Swimmer Mike Kenny is among Great Britain's most successful Paralympians. Kenny began his Paralympic success at the 1976 Games in Toronto, where he shared a room with teammate Philip Craven who went on to be the long-time president of the International Paralympic Committee.

Kenny would win three gold medals in Toronto and match that performance four years later in Arnhem. He would improve with age, though, and went on to take five gold medals at both the 1984 and 1988 Games to take his tally to 16 Paralympic titles, almost solely in the 1A category over sprint distances.

The efforts of Sarah Storey at the Rio Games took her into the same stratosphere as Kenny. In 2016, Storey won three gold medals to take her tally to 14 Paralympic titles, and 25 medals overall. She began her Paralympic career in 1992 as a swimmer, competing in the pool at her first four Games. Then, in 2008, she switched to cycling and quickly had success, winning six gold medals across the Beijing and London Games.

Tanni Grey-Thompson in athletics, David Roberts in swimming, multi-sport athlete Isabel Newstead and equestrian athlete Lee Pearson are Great Britain's other top gold medal-winners.

Pearson has dominated dressage events since 2000, winning at least one gold medal at the most recent five Paralympic Games and winning multiple medals at each.

The Rio Games in 2016 were Great Britain's best for some time. The NPC won 64 gold medals, 30 more than it accumulated as host in London four years earlier, and its 147 total medals was Great Britain's highest tally since 1988.
