General Interest

Egypt has been a consistent Paralympic performer, winning at least one gold medal at every Games since 1976. Over the 40-year period between 1976 and 2016, the NPC amassed a tally of over 10 total medals at all but three editions of the Games.

In recent years, however, its overall performance has fallen away slightly. The NPC won 15 medals in 2012, and 12 in 2016, far from the heights of 1996 and 2000, when it won 30 and 28, respectively.

Although athletics is Egypt's most successful sport at the Games, powerlifting has become the sport in which it has collected most of its medals in recent years. All of Egypt's 11 gold medals up to the 1992 Paralympic Games in Barcelona came in athletics, while powerlifting has accounted for 16 of the NPC's 17 gold medals at the last four editions of the Games.

Egypt's two most successful athletes have both won four gold medals each. J1 category athlete Metwali Ahmed Khadr won all of his four gold medals at the 1976 Games, throwing further than anyone else in the discus, shot put, javelin and precision javelin, and would go on to claim silver in the javelin in 1980.

While Khadr's successes all came in one edition of the Games, Fatma Omar had a more sustained period of dominance. She first won gold in the women's 44kg powerlifting event before winning three consecutive 56kg titles. Her dominance spanned from 2000 to 2012 but when she stepped up to the 61kg event in 2016, she was forced to settle for silver.
