Denmark - Profile
General Interest
Denmark made its Paralympic debut at the 1968 Games in Tel Aviv. Athletes from the NPC have won gold in a number of sports since then, including Boccia gold for Henrik Jorgensen at the 1984 Games, successive titles for the men's goalball team in 2000 and 2004, and archery gold for Finn Larsen in 1980 and Jens Fudge in 1992. However, Denmark's most successful Paralympic sports are athletics and swimming.
Wheelchair racer Ingrid Lauridsen won six gold medals at the 1984 Games, securing victory in category 2 over 100m, 200m, 400m, 800m, 1500m, and 5000m. She also won two gold medals at Seoul 1988, successfully defending her titles over 400m and 800m from four years earlier. Another highly successful Danish athlete at the Paralympic Games is Connie Hansen, who claimed gold medals over distances ranging from 400m to the marathon [category 4, TW4 and TW3-4]. Hansen competed at three consecutive editions of the Games between 1984 and 1992, and recorded her best performance at Seoul 1988 where she won gold medals in all five events she entered.
Denmark's most recent medal in swimming came at the 2008 Games in Beijing, but competitors from the NPC have registered some impressive performances in the sport, particularly in the 1980s. John Petersson, who has served as president of Paralympic Committee Denmark, won a total of six gold medals in the men's L1 category across the 1984 and 1988 Games. There were four gold medals for Stephan Dahl in the men's C5 category at the 1984 Games, and five gold medals for Anders Christensen, also in the men's C5 class, four years later in Seoul.
Athletes from Denmark won only one gold medal at both London 2012 and Rio 2016. Jackie Christiansen won the men's F42/44 shot put at the 2012 Games to go along with his gold medals from Beijing 2008 [F44 shot put] and Athens 2004 [F44/46 shot put]. Table tennis player Peter Rosenmeier was the NPC's sole gold medallist in 2016, winning the men's class 6 singles. He had also claimed gold in the same event eight years earlier in Beijing.
