Croatia - Profile
General Interest
Croatia first competed at the Paralympic Games in 1992 in Barcelona, and has been represented at each edition of the Games since. Athletes from the NPC have won a total of five gold medals at the Games, with four coming in athletics events and the other in table tennis.
Three of Croatia's gold medals were won at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Darko Kralj was the NPC's first Paralympic champion, claiming gold in the men's F42 shot put, and the following day Antonia Balek triumphed in the women's F33-34/52-53 javelin. Balek then won her second gold medal, this time in the F32-34/52-53 shot put, to become Croatia's first multiple Paralympic gold medallist.
The NPC added its fourth and fifth gold medals at Rio 2016. Sandra Paovic won table tennis gold in the women's class 6 singles before Mikela Ristoski secured victory in the women's T20 long jump.
Other notable performances at the Paralympic Games include those by Mihovil Spanja. He is the only swimmer representing Croatia to have finished on the podium at the Paralympic Games, winning a total of four bronze medals [three at Athens 2004, one at London 2012] across four appearances at the Games between 2000 and 2012.
