Colombia - Profile
General Interest
Athletes from Colombia first competed at the Paralympic Games in 1976 in Toronto. With the exception of the 1984 Games, the NPC has been represented by a delegation of competitors at each edition of the Games since.
Colombia sent 39 athletes to the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, who recorded an overall total of two gold, five silver and 10 bronze in Brazil. Mauricio Valencia claimed gold in the men's F34 javelin throw, while there was also gold for swimmer Carlos Serrano in the men's SB7 100m breaststroke. Serrano also won a silver medal and a bronze in the pool at Rio 2016 to bring his total of Paralympic medals to three.
Other notable results for Colombian athletes at the 2016 Games included three silver medals for swimmer Nelson Crispin and a bronze for Moises Fuentes in the men's SB4 100m breaststroke. Fuentes had won silver in 2012 and bronze in 2008 [both in the same event] to bring his overall haul to three as well. There were also three bronze medals for Colombian cyclists in Rio de Janeiro. Diego Duenas and Edwin Matiz placed third in their respective events on the track, and Nestor Javier Ayala finished third in the T1-2 road race.
Before Rio 2016, one of Colombia's most successful Paralympians was swimmer Pedro Mejia. He won gold in 1980 in the men's D 100m breaststroke, and also claimed bronze in the C-D 100m backstroke at the same edition of the Games.
