Chile - Profile
General Interest
Chile was first represented at the Paralympic Games in 1992. Athletes from the NPC have participated in each edition of the Games since then, competing in canoe sprint, powerlifting, wheelchair tennis, athletics, table tennis, and swimming.
Chile celebrated its first Paralympic medal at the 2012 Games in London, where Cristian Valenzuela won the men's T11 5000m athletics event by almost eight seconds to secure gold. Valenzuela just missed out on a second podium finish in London, placing fourth in the T11 1500m.
Other Chilean athletes to go close to a Paralympic medal include swimmer Gabriel Vallejos Contreras, who finished fourth in the S3 50m backstroke at Barcelona 1992 and then placed fourth in the S3 50m butterfly four years later in Atlanta. There were also three fourth-place finishes for Chile at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. Powerlifter Maria Antonieta Ortiz, T47 runner Amanda Cerna, and sprint paddler Katherine Wollermann all just missed out on the podium.
