General Interest

Belgian athletes have competed at each edition of the Paralympic Games since 1960. Competitors from the NPC have won gold medals in a number of sports during this period, including swimming, shooting, 7-a-side football, and cycling, but Belgium has achieved most success in athletics.

Paul van Winkel secured multiple Paralympic gold medals during the 1980s. He competed as a sprinter, claiming gold in the 4x100m relay in 1980, and then won further gold medals at the Games in 1984 and 1988 in the 400m, 800m, 1500m, and 5000m events. Another Belgian multiple gold medallist is Alex Hermans, who participated in fields events. He made four appearances at the Paralympic Games between 1980 and 1992, securing gold medals in shot put, long jump, and discus throw.

One of Belgium's most decorated female athletes is Marie-Line Pollet. She won gold medals in shot put and pentathlon at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, and then another gold in pentathlon four years later in Seoul. She also competed in discus throw and sprint events at the Paralympic Games, winning a further three silver medals and two bronze medals across the 1984 and 1988 Games. Later in her career she switched sports to table tennis and secured bronze in the women's class three singles at the 1996 Games in Atlanta.

Belgium won five gold medals at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, which included two for track athlete Peter Genyn in the men's T51 100m and T51 400m. Equestrian dressage rider Michele George also claimed gold in Brazil, successfully defending her title in the grade IV open individual freestyle from four years earlier in London.
