General Interest
Athletes from Belarus claimed eight gold medals at the 2016 Paralympic Games in Rio de Janeiro, of which six were won by swimmer Ilhar Boki in the men's S13 events. Boki had also excelled at the 2012 Games in London, where he secured a total of five gold medals in butterfly, freestyle, backstroke, as well as the individual medley. His tally is boosted by a silver medal he won at London 2012 and a bronze at Rio 2016 to give him an overall record of 13 Paralympic medals, which makes him the most decorated athlete representing Belarus in any sport at the Paralympic Games.
Other successful Belarusian swimmers at the Paralympic Games include Roman Makarov and Sergei Punko. Makarov won five gold medals between 2000 and 2008, which included three straight victories in the S12 100m butterfly, while Punko claimed three golds across the 2004 and 2008 Games. Both swimmers switched to represent the Russian Federation at the 2012 Games in London and went on to win gold for their new nation.
Oleg Chepel, who has served as president of the Belarus NPC, had significant success as a Paralympic track and field athlete. He made his Paralympic debut in 1988 for the Soviet Union, represented the Unified Team at Barcelona 1992, and then went on to make a further two Paralympic appearances in the colours of Belarus. As part of the Belarusian team he won gold in the T10-11 high jump at the 1996 Games in Atlanta, as well as three bronze medals at Sydney 2000, to go along with the four gold medals he won in 1988 and 1992 across the pentathlon, long jump, high jump and 400m while representing the Soviet Union and the Unified Team.
One of Belarus' most successful female athletes is Tamara Sivakova, who won discus and shot put medals across five editions of the Games for Belarus [1996 - 2008] and the Unified Team [1992]. She claimed four gold medals, two in each throwing discipline, as well as three silver medals and one bronze medal.
