General Interest

Azerbaijan's first medal came in Sydney in 2000 when shooter Yelena Taranova won a silver medal in the SH1 mixed event. Four years later Oleg Panyutin became the first Azerbaijani athlete to stand on the top step of the podium when he won the men's T12 long jump. Panyutin would take bronze in 2008 but claimed his second Paralympic title when he won the T12 triple jump in 2012.

Judoka Ilham Zakiyev also won gold in Athens in 2004. He won the men's +100kg category and would repeat the feat at the 2008 Games in Beijing, making him the first Azerbaijani multiple Paralympic champion.

In 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, the NPC won 11 medals in total, including one gold. Judoka Ramil Gasimov won the 73kg category.
