General Interest
Afghanistan has sent a delegation of athletes to five editions of the Paralympic Games since 1996, missing out on only the 2000 Games in Sydney. Athletes from the NPC competed in cycling, athletics, and powerlifting during that period, but are yet to win a medal.
Cyclists Gul Afzal and Zabet Khan were the first athletes to represent the nation at a Paralympic Games when they both took part in the LC3 road race at the 1996 Games in Atlanta. Athletics competitor Mareena Karim became the first female athlete to represent Afghanistan at a Paralympic Games when she finished ranked 15th in the women's T46 100m event at the 2004 Games in Athens.
Powerlifter Mohammad Fahim Rahimi has made two Paralympic appearances. He competed in the 67.5kg category at the 2008 Games in Beijing, and then placed 12th in the 75kg category four years later in London.
