General Interest

General
Hungary booked their ticket to Tokyo 2020 at the World Qualification Tournament in Trieste in January 2021.

The Hungarian team are still seeking their first Olympic medal, having finished fourth at each of the last three Olympic Games. At Beijing 2008 they lost the bronze medal match in a penalty shoot-out to Australia. Four years later in London they met the Australians in the third place match once again, and this time lost 13-11 following extra time.

At Rio 2016, Hungary faced Australia in the quarterfinals and turned the tables by winning 13-11. They were then beaten in the semifinals by eventual champions the United States of America, setting up a bronze medal match with the Russian Federation, which the Hungarians ultimately lost in a penalty shoot-out.

Hungary won world titles in 1994 and 2005, but have not finished on the world championship podium since 2013. At the 2019 World Championships they lost another bronze medal match to Australia.

Hungary were runners-up at the World League Super Final in June 2021, losing 14-8 to the US team in the gold medal match.
