General Interest

General
The United States of America secured their spot for Tokyo 2020 by winning Pool C at the 2019 Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament. The US team are five-time Olympic medallists, which includes podium finishes at the last three editions of the Games, but they are yet to win gold.

At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, the United States of America secured bronze with a 3-1 victory over the Netherlands in the third-place match after losing to Serbia in five sets in the semifinals. The US team had reached the final in 2008 and 2012 but were beaten by Brazil in four sets on both occasions. They also won silver as hosts in 1984, when they missed out on gold to the People's Republic of China, and claimed bronze in 1992 in Barcelona.

The US team have had a mixed set of results in the period since Rio 2016. They won silver at the 2019 World Cup and the team have excelled in the Nations League, claiming the title at all three editions since the tournament was established in 2018. However, they failed to reach the final four at the 2018 World Championship in Japan and the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru.
