General Interest

General
Serbia qualified for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo by winning Pool A of the 2019 Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament in Wroclaw, Poland.

The Serbians are making their fourth Olympic appearance in Tokyo, and arrive having won their first medal at the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro. The team beat the Russian Federation and the United States of America in the knockout stages on their way to the final against the People's Republic of China, who they had already defeated in straight sets in the preliminary round of the tournament. However, the Chinese team that turned up in the final was a different proposition and they claimed gold with a 3-1 victory, with the Serbian team having to settle for the silver medal.

The Serbian team have been in top form in the years leading up to Tokyo 2020. They claimed gold at the 2018 World Championship in Japan, and won back-to-back titles at the European championship in 2017 and 2019. However, their performance at the 2019 World Cup, where they lost seven of their 11 matches, was a blip in an otherwise impressive set of recent results.
