General Interest

General
The Republic of Korea booked their ticket to Tokyo by winning the 2020 Asian Olympic Qualification Tournament in Nakhon Ratchasima, Thailand.

The Korean team are making their 12th appearance at an Olympic Games in Tokyo. However, they have only won one Olympic medal since debuting at the Games in 1964, a bronze in 1976 in Montreal. The team came close to a podium finish at London 2012, but lost the bronze medal match 3-0 to Japan, and in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro the Koreans exited the competition in the quarterfinals following a 3-1 defeat to the Netherlands.

The Republic of Korea have found it difficult on the world stage in recent years, placing 17th at the 2018 World Championship in Japan and finishing sixth at the 2019 World Cup. They have also not progressed past the League Round of the Nations League since the tournament began in 2018.

The team's form at continental level has been better. They won four bronze medals and one silver medal at the five editions of the Asian championship between 2011 and 2019, although they are still looking for their first title at the tournament. The Koreans were champions at the 2014 Asian Games on home soil in Incheon, and despite being unable to defend their title four years later in Indonesia after losing to Thailand in the semifinals, they did recover to beat Japan 3-1 in the bronze medal match.
