General
Known as the 'Queens of the Caribbean', the Dominican Republic secured qualification for Tokyo by winning the 2020 North American Olympic Qualification Tournament in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. They defeated Mexico, Canada, and Puerto Rico on home soil to guarantee their spot for the 2020 Olympic Games.

The Dominican team are making their third Olympic appearance in Tokyo. They finished bottom of their group on their debut in 2004 in Athens, with their sole victory coming against the United States of America. The team did not compete at the 2008 Games but qualified for the knockout rounds in 2012 in London, where they were defeated in the quarterfinals by a US team that went on to win the silver medal.

Since their last Olympic appearance in 2012, the team's most significant result is the gold medal they won at the 2019 Pan American Games in Lima, Peru. The Dominicans also won bronze at the previous edition of the Games in Toronto in 2015. At continental level they secured the title at the 2019 NORCECA Championship, which was their first win at the tournament since 2009.

The Dominican Republic have participated at eight editions of the world championships since their debut appearance in 1974 and posted a best result of fifth in 2014. Most recently they were ranked ninth at the 2018 edition in Japan.
