General Interest

General
The People's Republic of China secured a spot for Tokyo 2020 by winning their pool at the 2019 Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament. They are looking to defend the Olympic title they won in 2016 in Rio de Janeiro, which was the team's third gold medal at the Games. Their run to the final in Rio included victories over hosts Brazil and the Netherlands in the knockout stages, before they defeated Serbia 3-1 to secure gold.

The Chinese team's other Olympic gold medals came in 1984 and 2004. They were runners-up in 1996 in Atlanta, following defeat to Cuba in the final, and finished with bronze in 1988 in Seoul and as hosts in 2008.

The Chinese arrive in Tokyo as reigning champions at the World Cup, having won the two most recent editions of the tournament in 2015 and 2019. They secured their fifth World Cup title in 2019 with a 100% record at the tournament, winning all 11 of their matches.

The People's Republic of China won bronze in the Final Round of the Nations League in both 2018 and 2019, which were the first two years the tournament was held. They also finished on the podium at the two most recent editions of the world championships, losing the 2014 final to the United States of America and then beating the Netherlands in the bronze medal match in 2018. Their last world championship title came back in 1986 in Czechoslovakia, where they successfully defended the gold medal they had won four years earlier in Peru.

The Chinese team have dominated the competition at the Asian Games, winning eight of the 10 gold medals on offer since 1982. They are also one of the most successful sides at the Asian championship, claiming the title on five occasions since the turn of the century. However, they missed out on a podium spot in both 2017 and 2019, losing to the Republic of Korea in the bronze medal match both times.
