She was a member of the Chinese women's team that won gold at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. She also won a gold medal at the 1982 World Championship in Peru and at the 1982 Asian Games, as well as silver medals at the 1981 and 1985 World Cup. She led the Chinese women's team to silver at the 2014 World Championship in Italy. In her first stint as coach she led the team to a bronze medal at the 1995 World Cup in Japan, and silver medals at the 1996 Olympic Games in Atlanta and the 1998 World Championship in Japan. 2013

She coached Italian women's teams Volley Modena [1999-02], Asystel Novara [2002-04] and Pieralisi Jesi [2005], as well as Guangdong Evergrande women's team in the People's Republic of China [2009-14]. She served as head coach of the Chinese women's national team from 1995 to 1999, and head coach of the US women's national team between 2005 and 2008. She also held the position of assistant coach at the University of New Mexico between 1987 and 1989, and again from 1992 to 1993.
