General Interest

General
Brazil confirmed their qualification for the 2020 Olympic Games by topping Pool D of the 2019 Intercontinental Olympic Qualification Tournament. Placed in a group with the Dominican Republic, Azerbaijan, and Cameroon, the Brazilians won all three matches to secure their spot for Tokyo.

At the 2016 Games in Rio de Janeiro, the Brazilian team were chasing their third consecutive Olympic gold medal following back-to-back victories at Beijing 2008 and London 2012. Despite winning all five of their preliminary round matches, they were beaten 3-2 in the quarterfinals by eventual gold medal winners, the People's Republic of China. The team secured bronze in 1996 and 2000, losing to Cuba at the semifinal stage in both Atlanta and Sydney, but they missed the podium in 2004 following another defeat to the Cubans - this time in the bronze medal match.

The Brazilians have finished on the world championship podium on four occasions, securing runners-up spots in 1994, 2006, and 2010, and winning bronze in 2014. Brazil were ranked seventh at the most recent edition of the tournament in 2018.

Brazil were the most successful nation at the World Grand Prix and won the final two editions of the tournament, in 2016 and 2017, before the tournament was replaced by the Nations League and the Challenger Cup. The Brazilians were runners-up in the Final Round of the 2019 Nations League, having placed fourth at the inaugural edition in 2018. They were also ranked fourth at the 2019 World Cup in Japan, where they won seven of their 11 matches.
