General Interest

General
Canada returned to Olympic action at the 2016 Games after a 24-year absence. They lost in the quarterfinals in Rio to the Russian Federation, after impressing in Pool A with a second-place finish behind Italy and ahead of hosts Brazil and eventual bronze medallists the United States of America. The Canadian team's best Olympic result came at the 1984 Games in Los Angeles, when a squad containing their coach Glenn Hoag finished fourth. After topping their group, they went on to lose to hosts United States of America in the semifinals, and were defeated in straight sets by Italy in the bronze medal match.

The Canadians sealed qualification for Tokyo, their fifth Olympic participation, by winning the 2020 North American Olympic Qualification Tournament on home soil in Vancouver. Victories over Cuba, Puerto Rico and Mexico mean that for the first time Canada will compete in back-to-back Olympic competitions in men's volleyball.

Canada are regular competitors at the world championships but have never won a medal. In the most recent edition in 2018 they exited in the second group stage, four years after their best-ever finish of seventh at the 2014 edition.

They registered their first podium finish in the World League in 2017, defeating the US team in the third-place match, but have not made the final round of the newly-created Nations League in 2018 or 2019.
