General
Brazil are the reigning Olympic and World Cup champions. After losing the 2008 and 2012 Olympic finals, Brazil did not disappoint in front of a home crowd in 2016 as they defeated Italy 3-0 to reclaim the Olympic title they last won in 2004, when they also defeated Italy in the gold medal match.

At the 2012 and 2008 Olympic Games, Brazil had won the first set of the gold medal match on both occasions, but ultimately went down to the United States of America 3-1 [2008] and the Russian Federation 3-2 [2012], with their defeat in London including two gold medal points for the Brazilians when leading 2-0.

Brazil are one of three nations [alongside the United States of America and the Soviet Union] to have won three Olympic gold medals, and one of two nations [alongside the Soviet Union] to have won a total of six Olympic medals. Brazil, however, top the traditional Olympic medal table courtesy of three silver medals compared to two for the Soviet Union.

The Brazilians have won a medal at the previous five world championships, but after three consecutive golds between 2002 and 2010 they had to settle for second in 2014 and 2018 when they lost to Poland in the final on both occasions. In the round robin World Cup, Brazil are the reigning champions having gone undefeated in 11 matches at the 2019 edition.

After losing the third-place match at the first two editions of the Nations League, Brazil claimed their first title at the 2021 Nations League in Italy, triumphing 3-1 against the Polish team in the final. Prior to their success in 2021, the Brazilians were without a title in the Nations League or its predecessor, the World League, since victory in 2010, but did achieve a number of second-place finishes at the editions in between.

Brazil sealed their place in Tokyo with victory in Pool A of the 2019 Olympic Qualification Tournament.
