Switzerland claimed their place at Tokyo 2020 by finishing third at the Olympic qualification event in Lisbon in May 2021.

The Swiss team were a major force in the early days of the mixed relay world championships. They were crowned champions at the first two editions of the competition, in 2009 and 2010, before winning silver in 2011. However, in the decade since then, Switzerland have not added to their world championship medal collection. At the 2020 edition they ranked seventh, which is the joint-highest placing they have managed at the world championships since 2013. Their best result on the World Series has been a silver medal at the 2019 event in Nottingham. Later that year they got a taste of the course for the 2020 Olympic Games, but could only finish 14th at the World Series event in Tokyo.

In 2018 Switzerland won silver at the European championships in Glasgow, before finishing seventh at the 2019 edition.
